The term "The Flipped Classroom" refers to an innovative blended delivery model that is currently very popular in education. It uses online videos in order for students to learn. Originally, these began as a way to allow absent students to gain access to lectures. However, they now have evolved the way that students and teachers spend time in the classroom. In this model, students listen to the lectures prior to attending class in order to be able to use class time more efficiently. I think this a very smart idea. While doing this assignment, I realized that we currently have this system in place in EME 2040. Each week, we are expected to listen to a podcast prior to attending class. Although the podcasts aren't lectures, they deliver information on the concepts that we are learning weekly. I really like that we do this as it prepares us for class. This prepares us to dive right into discussion on these topics as soon as class begins. An awesome example of a source of educational videos is Khan Academy. This site offers helpful videos for a great variety of subjects. Personally, I have used it in Biology class. I found Khan Academy very beneficial as I could click on a specific biology topic to learn about. Within the lessons, not only were lectures offered but there were also interactive lessons that made the learning process fun and engaging.
Open education makes educational experiences open to a wide audience by making educational tools more accessible online. These tools include but are not limited to lectures and notes. When individuals take part in open education, they do not have to worry about the location of classes or about having the financial means to attend school. I find this extremely neat. Many of the individuals in my life, including my parents, have been unable to get an education due to their financial situation. Therefore, I hope that open education grows more and more in the future. Moreover, open education helps students by giving them access to free, helpful tools. An open education resource that seems very beneficial is CK-12. This site provides free, openly-licensed textbooks for K-12. Something neat about the site is that most of their content is their to cover specific educational curriculum standards. I wish I would have known about this site throughout high school. I remember not having a textbook for one of my classes because my school simply couldn't afford a class set. Perhaps, that textbook is uploaded on CK-12. Besides CK-12, there are a plethora of beneficial sites on the web, which offer open content. I am going to look into it more.

By working on the two PowerPoint assignments, I have gained many new skills. Specifically, I have learned how to make my presentations more engaging by creating my own templates. Prior to these assignments, I had never done anything like this. At first, I found it a bit difficult to learn these new skills. However, I now feel like a pro! I also learned how to add a recording to my presentation in order to create a lecture style presentation. I could see myself using this one day in my own classroom. I could then upload my presentation online for any absent students or students who simply would like to review, could access. Additionally, I enjoyed making my presentations more elaborate than I ever have. Looking back at both assignments, I noticed that I made my second one much more elaborate than my first. This demonstrates that I have really been learning while completing these assignments. I have found both of these assignments really fun. I look forward to continuing using PowerPoint in class.
Check out both of presentations:
I agree that Kahn Academy is a great resource for educational video. Have you ever used Virtual Nerd? http://virtualnerd.com/ I used it when I did some flipped activities in my math classes. I like how it makes taking notes easy. But it would be better if it was more engaging.
